ARTIST BOOKS | Folded Books

I began creating folded books in 1989, exploring the accordion format as a way to integrate painting, text, and three-dimensional form. It manifested in nearly 500 Books of The Days. Between 2003 and 2024 this practice occurred more sparingly, but started again with unique folded objects in 2024. I mixed acrylic pens with graphite, pens, but was working primarily in watercolor to investigate the book as both intimate object and sculptural form. I envisioned these object as meditation pieces, that could be taken anywhere in order to make a room personal. their modular form calls for variation and playfulness

The accordion fold allows me to create continuous painted narratives that transform depending on how they’re displayed—fully extended, partially opened, or collapsed into compact sculptures. Each fold functions as a hinge between moments, creating rhythms of revelation and concealment.

This renewed engagement with folded books brings together decades of artistic development, merging my abstract painting practice with the sequential, architectural possibilities of the book form.
